Dante wrote in terza rima, an interlocking rhyme scheme in which he rhymed alternate lines with a consistent tempo between lines. this is my attempt to retain this in an english translation:

-- If I had believed that my reply
Was to one who could regain the earth,
This pyre would stand without reply.

But from this abyss no one returned
Alive yet, if what I hear is right,
Without fear I will speak in earnest.
